PROTECT THE HEART: FORTER A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE STARTING TODAY
In 2023, The WHF specified in the World Heart Report that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been the primary cause of death and are the main factors of disabilities. Universally, the estimated cases of death due to cardiovascular diseases have increased from about 12.1 million in 1990 (evenly distributed among men and women) up to 18,6 million (9.6 million among men and 8.9 million among women) in 2019 and 19.5 million in 2022.
Cardiovascular disease is among the most dangerous, death-causing diseases in the world
In Vietnam, cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of death, responsible for 33% of total deaths. According to the data from the Ministry of Health, every year, 200,000 lives are lost due to cardiovascular disease in Vietnam, 20 times more than the number of deaths caused by cancer, and 10 times the number of deaths caused by traffic accidents.
Cardiovascular disease is perceived as a consequence of old age. In reality, the rate of cardiovascular disease in young and middle aged adults is constantly increasing. Young people tend to think that they are not at risk of afflicting such disease leading to a lack of caution and proper preventive measures.
Therefore, a change in lifestyle is needed to establish a healthier lifestyle for a “strong heart”:
– Control weight, lose weight (if overweight).
– Have a balanced diet.
+ Reduce salty food (lower salt per portion) (under 6g salt/day) and sweet food.
+ Reduce alcohol consumption.
+ Avoid food that is high in cholesterol and saturated fat.
+ Eat more vegetables and fibers.
– Don’t smoke or use stimulants.
– Exercise frequently.
+ Walk outside, work out, play sports for at least 30 minutes each day.
– Manage tension, reduce stress.
– Be mindful about sleep quality.
– Periodically check other factors (blood disorders, blood lipids, …) and monitor cardiovascular health and follow the recommended preventive measures.
– Effectively treat conditions such as: Type II diabetes, metabolic lipid disorders.
Regular health check-ups are necessary for effective prevention of cardiovascular disease.
By cultivating and spreading healthy habits, we can safeguard our own and our families’ cardiovascular health, lower the risk of coronary artery disease, and create a fulfilling and joyful life.
